Prof Chris Rapley took up his post as Director of the Science Museum on 1st September 2007. He is well known as an expert in climate change science and was previously Director of the British Antarctic Survey. Upon the announcement of his new role Prof Rapley said: "I am thrilled at the prospect of taking on the leadership of such a cherished national institution, especially as the task I have been set is to make it the most admired museum in the world." He was awarded the 2008 Edinburgh Medal for his work on climate and climate change.
